Finding Your Way out of the Philippine Airport

The most efficient and safest (and the fastest) way to the Philippines is to travel by air.

Your main gateway to the Philippines’ capital by plane is the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), located also in the Philippine Metropolis.

There are only 4 terminals in NAIA, including the old domestic terminal. (So there’s NAIA1, NAIA2, NAIA3 and the old Domestic terminal). How easy is that to remember?

Upon arrival, knowing your way out of the airport bound to different areas of the Philippine Metropolis is important. Here are your choices of transportation:

1.       Taxi Cabs (either regular or airport taxi service)
2.       Airport Coupon Taxi Service or Rent a car service
3.       Shuttle services
4.       Jeepney or the PUJ

                  Taxi Cabs

Airport taxis exclusively serve passengers arriving and departing NAIA. They’re yellow compact sedans and have their own waiting area near the exit doors.

Rates start at Php70.00 (around $1.60) for the first half kilometers and Php4.50 (or $0.11) for every succeeding 300 meters.

It has higher rates compared to regular cabs but it’s worth it. They’re clean, well maintained, and safe. (and issue receipts)

If you see white or red cabs then they’re the Regular Taxi cabs.

Rates are Php40.00 (less than $1) for the first 500 meters and Php3.50 (approx $0.085) for the next 300 meters or every 2 minutes when motionless.

Don’t worry. Your safety still isn’t compromised by that cheaper rate. Cab owners and drivers are honest.

Plate numbers, operator names and contact information are posted inside every cab so you can always report any incidents. NAIA’s terminal staffs also monitor these cabs so you can relax and enjoy the trip.

What if you’re headed somewhere far from the Philippine Metropolis?

You’re right. Cabs would be a little more expensive. Then take the Airport Coupon Taxi Service or Rent a car service.

Airport Coupon Taxi Service or Rent a car service

They’re just outside the terminal. They’re easy to find, just near the exit doors.

Using current model sedans and AUVs, these provide fixed rate from the Terminal to any point (even outside Philippine Metropolis ) and vise –versa.

Rates would depend upon your pickup or drop off point. Since rates are fixed you don’t have to worry about overcharging.

          Shuttle services

You might see Mini-buses upon exit. These are the shuttle services.

It has two routes.

The first route start starts at NAIA 3, then a stop at Baclaran, then Metror Rail Transit (MRT) station in Taft Ave., then in Tramo, and back to NAIA 3.

The second route is from NAIA 3, then Old Domestic Airport then to NAIA 1, then NAIA 2 then back to NAIA 3.

It is efficient and affordable if you’re bound to the mentioned routes. (only Php20.00 or $0.46). so if you’re:

Not headed to the mentioned routes,
Not familiar with the stops, or
Have heavy or excess luggage.

…better take the first two rides (taxis or rent a car service)

The Jeepney or the PUJ, as we call it.

The Philippines’ trademark when it comes to passenger vehicles. (Symbol of Philippine culture). This is probably the most inexpensive ride from the list.

They’re the evolution of the surplus jeeps used by the American troops from World War II, expanded and converted to carry 16 passengers.

Fare is only Php8.00 ($0.20) for the first 4 kilometers and an additional Php1.00 for every succeeding kilometer.

You’ll find them far outside the terminal, (a bit far from the exit), so you still need to walk for about 10-15 minutes to see them.

Recommended only:
For short distances travel. (within 4kms or less),
For those who’s familiar with its routes,
If you want adventure and you want to just try it, and
If you don’t bring with you some luggage.

To save time and have a more comfortable ride, I’d recommend taking the taxi services for short distances trip and the Airport Coupon Taxi Service or Rent a car service for trips outside the Philippine Metropolis. You can read about the different modes of transportation in the Philippine Metropolis in the next page.
